AI Voiceover for Beginners: Make Your First Narration with ElevenLabs

You wrote a script — for a video, a podcast intro, a presentation. Now you need a voice, but you don't own a microphone, you hate the sound of your own recordings, or you need it in a language you don't speak. AI voiceover fills exactly that gap: paste in text, get back a human-sounding narration in minutes. This guide walks you through your first one with ElevenLabs, the tool whose voices currently sound the most natural, using nothing but its free tier.

What AI voiceover actually is

Text-to-speech is old — your phone has read notifications aloud for years. What changed is quality. Older robotic voices read words; modern AI voices perform them, with natural rhythm, emphasis, and pauses. The result is close enough to a human narrator that listeners often can't tell the difference in a short clip.

ElevenLabs is the current leader in sounding human. That doesn't mean it's the only option (Murf, PlayHT, and others exist), but for a beginner's first project it's the easiest recommendation: the free tier is genuinely usable, and the workflow is paste-text → press button → download audio.

Your first voiceover in 6 steps

1. Create a free account. Go to ElevenLabs and sign up. The free tier gives you 10,000 credits per month — roughly 10 minutes of audio. No credit card required to start.

2. Pick a voice. Open the voice library and listen to a few samples. For your first project, use one of the premade voices — skip voice cloning for now (more on that below). Choose a voice that fits the mood: calm for explainers, energetic for promos.

3. Paste your script. Keep it short for the first try — 100 to 200 words (about one minute of audio). If you don't have a script yet, write one with a chatbot first; see our chatbot comparison if you're not sure which to use.

4. Tweak two settings. You'll see sliders for stability and similarity. Don't overthink them: leave both near the defaults for your first generation. If the voice sounds flat, lower stability slightly for more expressiveness; if it mispronounces or drifts, raise it.

5. Generate and listen. Press generate, then actually listen to the whole clip with headphones. AI voices are good, but they still stumble — on unusual names, numbers, and long sentences.

6. Fix and re-generate. Editing is part of the process: split long sentences, add commas where you want pauses, spell out numbers ("twenty twenty-six" instead of "2026"). Re-generate only the broken sentences — every generation spends credits, so don't burn them re-rendering what already sounds fine.

Premade voices vs. cloning your own

ElevenLabs offers two paths:

  • Premade voices (free tier): a library of ready-made voices. This is where every beginner should start.
  • Voice cloning: upload a short sample of a voice and get an AI copy of it. Instant cloning is available from the paid Starter plan.

The honest advice: cloning is powerful and therefore sensitive. Only ever clone your own voice or a voice you have explicit permission to copy. Cloning someone else's voice without consent — a celebrity, a colleague, a stranger — is unethical and in many places illegal. For your first projects, you don't need it anyway.

Making it sound human: 5 practical tricks

  1. Write for the ear, not the eye. Short sentences. Simple words. Read your script aloud before pasting it in — if you stumble, the AI will too.
  2. Punctuate for pauses. Commas, periods, and line breaks control rhythm. An ellipsis (...) creates a longer, dramatic pause.
  3. Spell things out. "Dr." becomes "Doctor", "e.g." becomes "for example", "2026" becomes "twenty twenty-six". Abbreviations are the #1 cause of weird pronunciations.
  4. Generate in chunks. Do it paragraph by paragraph instead of all at once. It's easier to fix one bad paragraph than to re-render five minutes of audio.
  5. Mind your credits. Roughly 1,000 characters make one minute of speech. A 150-word script is about 1,000 characters — that's one-tenth of your free monthly allowance per minute.

Free vs. paid: the only rule that matters

PlanPriceWhat you getWho it's for
Free$0~10,000 credits/month (~10 min audio)Trying it out, practice projects
Starter~$5–6/month~30,000 credits/month (~30 min), instant voice cloningFirst real projects
Creator~$22/month~100,000+ credits/monthRegular content production

(Pricing shifts — confirm current numbers on ElevenLabs' official pricing page.)

The rule that actually matters isn't the price, it's the license: the free tier does not include commercial rights. Practicing, testing, making something for yourself — fine. Putting the voiceover in a monetized YouTube video, a client project, or an ad — that requires a paid plan, starting with Starter. This is the single most misunderstood part of AI voiceover pricing, and now you know it.

Three first projects to try

1. Narrate a short video. Take a 60-second clip — a screen recording, a slideshow, a product demo — and give it a voiceover. This is the classic first project because you'll immediately hear the difference a good narration makes.

2. Make a podcast intro and outro. Thirty seconds of intro music plus "Welcome to..." is a perfect bite-sized project: short script, one voice, done in an afternoon. Many podcasters never record their own voice again after this.

3. Dub something into another language. ElevenLabs handles 30+ languages. Take a script in your language, generate it in another, and you've made your first multilingual video. Creators use this to reach audiences they'd never otherwise reach.

Honest caveats

  • Disclose AI voices in commercial work. If viewers are paying for content or being persuaded by it, say the narration is AI-generated. It's becoming the norm, and audiences respect the honesty.
  • Never clone without consent. Worth repeating: only your voice or voices you have clear permission to use.
  • It's not a voice actor. For anything emotional, comedic, or character-driven, a human still wins. AI narration is best for clear, informational delivery — explainers, tutorials, announcements.

Explain it to a friend: "ElevenLabs turns written scripts into natural-sounding voiceovers. The free version gives you about 10 minutes a month to practice; if you want to use it in videos that make money, the paid plan starts around five dollars a month."

Do this today: Sign up free, pick one premade voice, and generate a 30-second intro for something — your channel, your project, your presentation. You'll learn more from that one clip than from any guide, including this one.

Prices and limits change — verify on ElevenLabs' official pricing page. The ElevenLabs link above will become our affiliate link once our partnership application is approved; it costs you nothing extra.

这篇指南带你用 ElevenLabs(目前声音最自然的工具)走完第一次配音,全程只用免费版。

会看到 stability(稳定性)和 similarity(相似度)两个滑块。

3. Dobla algo a otro idioma.

stability(安定性)とsimilarity(類似度)のスライダーがある。

Free$0
