A friendly robot choosing tools at a workbench

Choose your first AI tool

The best first tool is the one that fits a real task you already do. Begin with the job, then evaluate the tool.

Match the tool to the task

  • Chat assistant: drafting, explaining, brainstorming, and reorganizing text.
  • Research assistant: finding sources, comparing claims, and navigating a large topic.
  • Image generator: visual concepts, compositions, and original illustrations.
  • Transcription tool: turning your own audio or meetings into editable text.

Evaluate before you commit

Check whether the tool shows sources, how it handles your data, whether outputs can be exported, and what the paid limits actually include. A polished demo is not the same as a reliable workflow.

Run a three-task trial

Give every candidate the same three realistic tasks. Score the results for accuracy, editing time, ease of use, and cost. The winner is the tool that saves you the most effort after verification—not the one with the longest feature list.
